3 Reasons You May Need Laser Eye Surgery
Submitted by Michael J. Elman, M.D. on June 11, 2018
When most people think of laser eye surgery, they tend to think of the procedure used to improve one’s vision (LASIK). However, there are actually many other reasons as to why a person may need some form of laser eye surgery. These reasons aren’t always related to one’s vision quality, but their ocular health and overall health.
Here at Elman Retina Group, we specialize in laser eye surgery and a number of other types of eye surgeries, providing the highest level of care to every one of our patients.
Prevention of Retinal Detachment
One very common reason that we see the need for laser eye surgery in our patients is that of preventing retinal detachment. Often times, when a person’s retina has begun to detach, there isn’t a lot of time to spare; we need to act quickly. A laser procedure is often the quickest and most reliable way to reattach the retina safely and prevent detachment in the future, thus potentially saving a person’s eyesight in the process.
Treatment of Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy
For those with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, laser eye surgery may also be recommended by our staff. Laser eye surgery is one of the most reliable treatment options for this condition, and the procedure can be done relatively quickly in our office. Laser surgery is always a last resort as a treatment option because it is more invasive than some other treatments, but it’s still a viable choice for many of our patients facing proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Treatment of Diabetic Macular Edema
Finally, those with diabetes who are also suffering from macular edema may benefit from laser eye surgery in our office. We evaluate each instance on a case by case basis, so this isn’t necessarily a universal treatment. Still, it may be worth looking into for those with diabetic macular edema.
