Have you noticed a decrease in sharpness or clarity in your eyesight? Then you may be suffering from blurred vision. Blurred vision is a common occurrence but that does not mean it should be ignored. Blurred vision can be a sign of another medical condition that is impacting your health.

Elman Retina Group’s retinal specialists, Dr. Michael Elman and Dr. Sidney “Sid” Schechet, discuss what might be causing your blurred vision below.

Myopia

Myopia (nearsightedness) can cause distant objects to appear blurry.

Hyperopia

Hyperopia (farsightedness) can cause nearby objects to appear blurry.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a flaw in the curvature of the eye and its symptoms include blurred vision.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an age-related disease. It is the most common cause of vision loss in older adults. The main symptom of AMD is blurred vision.

Diabetes

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, then you may be aware that it can cause other health problems, including diabetic retinopathy. One symptom of diabetic retinopathy is blurred vision. However, the initial stages may have no symptoms at all. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, you should schedule regular eye exams. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness.

Ocular Trauma

Ocular trauma refers to an eye injury. If you have suffered an eye injury, then you may also be experiencing blurred vision. Any trauma to your eye should be examined by an ophthalmologist.

Macular Holes

Macular holes typically affect one eye and develop over time. Macular holes can cause blurred central vision and tend to appear after the age of 50. The eye doctors at Elman Retina Group are skilled at surgically repairing macular holes.

Retinal Detachment

A detached retina is a serious eye problem. It occurs when the retina, the innermost layer of the eye, detaches from the eye’s wall. Its symptoms can include floaters, flashes of light, and blurred vision. Prompt medical treatment, usually surgical, is required to treat retinal detachment.

Retinal Vein Occlusion

Retinal vein occlusion occurs when the tiny veins of the retina become blocked. When that occurs, blurry vision may result.

Migraine Attacks

Migraine attacks can cause vision problems including blurriness. You may experience blurry vision and other aura symptoms before a migraine, but your eyesight should stabilize when you are feeling better.

Inflammation (“Uveitis”)

Inflammatory diseases can affect every part of the eye and may be causing your blurred vision.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is characterized by a gradual increase of pressure in the eyes. It typically leads to optic nerve damage and vision loss and one of its symptoms is blurred vision.

Cataracts

A cataract is the clouding of an eye lens, and its symptoms can include blurry vision, as well as seeing halos and light sensitivity.
