Look Out for These 3 Symptoms of Macular Degeneration
Submitted by Elman Retina Group on February 11, 2022
The best way to treat any eye condition is to catch it early. Regular eye exams can help to identify issues with your eye health. However, you should also be on the lookout for changes in your eyes. These changes can indicate a more serious underlying condition, including macular degeneration.
Elman Retina Group’s Dr. Michael Elman and Dr. Sidney “Sid” Schechet are here to help. Our doctors discuss macular degeneration and the three symptoms you need to look out for in the information below.
Macular Degeneration
The macula is the part of your eye that is necessary to see objects directly in front of you. It is the central part of your eye’s retina, the area of your eye that controls visual acuity.
Macular degeneration is a common eye condition that can interfere with your ability to complete everyday functions. Age-related macular degeneration — also referred to as AMD — is the gradual deterioration of the macula that occurs as you age. AMD is the leading cause of vision loss among aging Americans. Unfortunately, AMD cannot be cured but there are treatments. However, early diagnosis and treatment can help to slow its progression and preserve vision. In addition to regular eye exams, you should be on the lookout for these three symptoms of macular degeneration.
1. Central Vision Issues
AMD impacts your central vision. You may notice that your vision is starting to blur over time or that there is a dark spot in the center of your field of vision. You may also notice that straight lines appear distorted or wavy. Your central vision is essential to facial recognition. One of the most common vision issues caused by AMD is diminished ability to recognize faces.
2. Discomfort Caused by Changing Light
Another sign of AMD is discomfort caused by changing light. You may find that it is uncomfortable for you to go from a bright room to a dark room or vice versa. You may also have difficulty seeing when headlights flash or when there is a glare.
3. Difficulty with Low Lighting
AMD can make it difficult for you to see in low lighting environments. This may make it difficult for you to perform everyday tasks. If you notice that you need brighter light levels for reading or other activities, you should schedule an eye exam.
You Celebrated a Birthday
While not actually a symptom, you should be aware that macular degeneration occurs as you age. If you are 50 or older, you should have your eyes examined regularly to check their health.
